Winter golf is what the Algarve is all about, generally offering great weather and lower accommodation rates winter a brilliant time to plan your golf escape. Just bear in mind as it is the most popular time of year you should book tee times well in advance and be aware on some occasion courses ask 2 balls to combine with other groups if booking during peak times. We will recommend the best times based on your group size to ensure you have the most enjoyable round possible.

Summer golf can be an excellent choice for people who can bear the heat, it is also a more relaxed time of year on the golf courses as there are less groups. Our general advice during summer golf is to take a buggy, it creates shade for you and makes the round much more enjoyable.

Most courses in are located in protected areas resulting in some stunning views, wide range of wildlife and incredible environmentally conscious grounds.

The Story of the Almond Blossom

Late January, early February is one of the loveliest time to visit the Algarve when the Almond trees are smothered in blossom.

Heralding the arrival of spring, the almond trees come into blossom and cover the Algarve in a mantle of white.

A unique sight that spreads across the fertile hillsides of the Barrocal region, where the almond trees are covered with clouds of flowers, whose petals are then scattered over the fields and create the impression of a carpet of snow shining in the sunlight.

The legend of the almond- blossom, is a story that has remained forever in the collective imagination of the Algarve people as a way of explaining this flowery end to the winter season.

According to the legend, in the time when the Al-Gharb belonged to the Arabs, there reigned in Silves the young prince Ibn-Almundim, who fell in love with and married Gilda, the daughter of a great lord of the northern peoples, who had himself been defeated in battle by the Moorish king.

Their wedding was celebrated with a great feast, but the beautiful princess remained forever sad and did not share the prince’s happiness. Physicians were called in from all over the world, but none of them succeeded in finding a cure for that pain.

Until, one day, an old Nordic man told the king that Gilda was homesick for the white snow-covered fields of her homeland.

Ibn-Almundim therefore ordered the planting of thousands of almond-trees all over the province, so that, when they blossomed, they might cover the southern lands with white petals, deceiving the princess into forgetting her feeling of homesickness and bringing joy back into her life.

And his bidding was complied with, so that, ever since that far-off springtime, the Algarve has been filled with the magic of the almond-trees in blossom.

Vale de Pinta:
Vale de Pinta golf in the Algarve, is rightly respected not just for its playability and challenging layout but for outstanding levels of beauty and enjoyment. Designed by the famous American golf course architect Ronald Fream and inaugurated in 1992 Vale de Pinta has earned its place as one of the best designed courses in the Algarve and in Europe.

Imagine the fairways of Bermuda grass, strategically placed sand bunkers, and greens clad in Pen Cross Bent grass. Not to mention ornamental lakes in a rolling terrain dotted with carob, fig, almond and olive trees (including one olive tree over 1200 years old!).

Gramcho:
After his success designing the Vale de Pinta course, Ronald Fream teamed up with the former world No. 1 Nick Price to create the unique design of Gramacho. With 18 holes and 27 greens, plus numerous different tee points, players are able to enjoy the same course time and time again but always with slightly different challenges.

Having hosted the Portuguese Ladies Open on a number of occasions Pestana Gramacho is recognized as a championship course enjoyable and playable even by those with a higher handicap.

Apart from the fantastic golf design, Ronald and Nick managed to incorporate the traditional landscape by utilizing the natural stone outcrops, historical dry stone walling and existing ancient trees with some artfully sculpted lakes and bunkers. The effect is a wonderful journey through the countryside.

Silves Golf:
Silves is a serene spot at the foot of the Monchique mountain, but it is anything other than 'a walk in the park' - a drive at the opening hole has to flirt with water hazards on both flanks.

This course is for players - low handicaps will find it a serious challenge to come in under par. But high handicaps (with concentration) will be able to enjoy their round.

Most holes offer spectacular mountain views overlooking palm trees and olive groves, the surrounding cork and citrus farms generate a true feeling of authentic Portuguese golf.

Alto Golf:
This is legendary golf course - is the last designed by architect Sir Henry Cotton, features the 600 meter par 5 known as the "Sir Henry challenge", and what a challenge it is!
