Holiday Inn Algarve enjoys success with British GT team

Last weekend saw the Holiday Inn Algarve join-up with leading sportscar racing team Sumo Power GT for round seven of the spectacular FIA GT1 World Championship at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve near Portimaô. And, following an impressive performance, the team won the first of the weekend’s two races.

In advance of the race-weekend, Holiday Inn Algarve formed an association with Sumo Power GT, who are the only UK based team competing in the world’s number-one racing series for iconic supercars. In return for its support, the team proudly displayed the Hotel’s logos on the front of its two, 600bhp, V8-engined, Nissan GT-Rs.

A faultless performance from second on the grid was enough to secure the first victory of the season for drivers Michael Krumm (Germany) and Peter Dumbreck (Banbury), with team-mates Warren Hughes (Newcastle) and Jamie Campbell-Walter (London) finishing eighth. Then, after starting form pole position for the second race, a faulty air-gun delayed Krumm and Dumbreck during their pit-stop, but they fought back through the field to finish fourth. Hughes and Campbell-Walter were not so fortunate and had to retire after being hit by another car.

“We were delighted to be associated with one of the UK’s leading GT teams”, said Vicki Good, Sales Manager for Holiday Inn Algarve. “Some of our Management were invited to join the team for the race meeting and I understand they had a great time. I am also pleased to report that the team enjoyed their stay at our hotel, particularly because of its beach location. I therefore look forward to welcoming them back next year.”

The Sumo Power GT team has now returned to its headquarters in Rye, East Sussex, to prepare for eighth round of the World GT1 Championship at the Navarra circuit in Northern Spain on 23rd & 24th October.

Travel Agents visit the Holiday Inn Algarve

We were very pleased to receive this group of Travel Agents from Lituânia for a visit to our Hotel on Monday evening.

Our receptionist Claudia showed them round the Hotel – she was delighted to answer all their questions.

These “educational” visits are very important to us, as they enable Travel Agents to collect information about the Hotel and the surrounding area, which they can in turn pass on to our future guests.

The Portuguese Cockerel

The cockerel is probably one of the most popular symbols of Portugal,

But do you actually know why it became such a famous symbol?

The legend dates back to the 14th Century, and like all legends, each narrator adds his own flavour.

In Barcelos, a small town in Portugal, a passing pilgrim, who was on his way to São Tiago de Compostela (in Spain) ,was wrongly accused of theft, for which the penalty was death. Feeling threatened in a foreign village, he only had his faith to call upon.

He appealed to "Our Lady" and St. James (the patron Saint of protection) that justice be done.

The pilgrim found his way to the Judge who was to decide his fate.

The judge was about to commence eating a roast cockerel for his dinner. The pilgrim pleaded, "If I am innocent, that cockerel will get up and crow.

The cockerel at once got up and crowed heartily. The pilgrim was released and went on his way.

And to this day, the cockerel has been a symbol of faith, justice and good luck.

Holiday Inn Algarve supports British GT Team

The Holiday Inn Algarve will be supporting one of the leading team’s competing in this weekend’s FIA GT1 World Championship race at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve: Sumo Power GT, which is the only UK-based team racing in this high-profile, global GT series. With one victory and five podium finishes under its belt already this season, Sumo Power GT is also one of the most successful teams in the championship. Its four drivers include three Brits: Peter Dumbreck, Warren Hughes and Jamie Campbell Walter and one German Michael Krumm, all regarded as some of the best in the business.

The team will be fielding its two impressive looking Nissan GT-Rs, these 600bhp V8-engined cars especially built to compete in this major international championship. Both will proudly display the Holiday Inn Algarve logos, the hotel pleased to be supporting the team this weekend, as Managing Director Stuart Hardy explains:

“We are delighted to be supporting the Sumo Power GT team in the forthcoming race at Portimao. This is the first time the hotel has become involved with this kind of promotional activity and, to be able to form an association with a team like this that is taking part in such a prestigious international championship is an exciting prospect. I am looking forward to welcoming the team to our hotel and wish them the best of luck for this weekend.”

This weekend’s event represents the seventh of the ten-round world series. The track action gets underway at 16.45 with the first of two, one-hour races on Saturday, followed by the main Championship race on Sunday which starts at 15.30.

“Fabulous holiday!” - Tripadvisor

Holiday Inn Algarve

Went to this hotel for a quiet holiday before the school holidays started. The hotel location is superb and the views are just stunning ! The hotel has now been taken over by Holiday Inn and there were some improvements going on while we were there, but this didn't detract from the service and quality of the hotel.

The rooms are great and it's worth paying for sea view - to wake up and hear the waves on the beach is just brilliant ! Rooms are cleaned daily by lovely staff and the dining room is superb - very spacious and plenty of choice.

Pool area is very well kept and there was never a rush to get beds although we were there 1st week of July. The private beach is ideal, just wander down to the beach and then you can walk up and down for miles.

Every single member of staff were exceptional - from reception who were there whenever we had a question or needed advice, to the barmen who remembered what we drinking and were just lovely, and the staff at the poolside bar who would bring your order to your sunbed rather than leave you waiting at the bar.

Will be going back next year for sure !

Tripadvisor - Holiday Inn Algarve

The location of this hotel is great! Just next to the nice beach and in the better end of the quite touristy Amarcao de Pera. Spacious, clean and quiet rooms, good facilities and a great breakfast buffé. The staff was helpful and friendly and the overall experience of this hotel was great!
