Supporting Local Sports Events

The Holiday Inn Algarve – Armação de Pêra enjoys being involved with the local community and recently had the opportunity to support two local sports events. In mid March they sponsored the 13th International Youth Football Tournament of Armação de Pêra, organized by the Football Club "The Amacenenses" in March, and were delighted when in recognition, the football club presented an emblem which reflects the support.

The second sporting event the Valverde Bowls Spring Pairs competition held at the club in Almancil on March 26 when bowlers from across the Algarve and western Spain came together to take part.

"Kulfi " - Indian Ice Cream

Kulfi or Qulfi is a popular flavored frozen dessert made from milk which originated in South Asia and is popular throughout neighbouring countries in the Middle East. It has similarities to ice cream in taste, texture and preparation.

Unlike Western ice creams, kulfi is not whipped, resulting in a solid, dense frozen dessert similar to traditional custard based ice-cream.

Don't miss this opportunity to try "Kulfi".

Algarve Ladies Lunch - 2011

Courtsey of the Algarve Resident

Ladies hear about friendship

Several Algarve ladies luncheon groups met at the Holiday Inn Algarve in Armação de Pêra on April 7 for a joint lunch and to celebrate friendship.

A total of 86 members from the Western, Eastern and Central Algarve Groups, As Serranas and attended the event organised by Carole Good-Dixon as an opportunity to socialise, share ideas and plan future events.

Guest speaker Sheena Rawcliffe, Managing Director of The Resident Group, publishers of the Algarve Resident, gave an inspiring talk into the subject of friendship and how it is undervalued in our society.

She said: “At school, it was easy to make friends. But friendships were also easily broken, perhaps because as teenagers we found love and our female friends became less important than our male friends.”

She went on to describe how our requirements from friends change as we get older and particularly how the Algarve’s expat community needs to “maintain” their friendships as some of its members can be faced with a divorce or the loss of a partner.

She said: “I get 200 emails a day and two are from friends. Please stop emails and texts to friends. Pick up the phone, arrange to meet with your friends and give them a hug.

“I don’t want to know about Facebook or Twitter. I enjoy seeing the colour of people’s eyes.”

Carole Good-Dixon said: “I’m absolutely thrilled to see so many ladies from across the Algarve here and to have Sheena as our speaker today is an honour. She managed to inspire us all to become better friends.”

“Really lovely - superb”

We have recently had one of the best holidays ever !

Leaving behind the stress and the cold and the rain of the UK, we needed some real rest and relaxation.

The Holiday Inn was the perfect place and the staff made us feel really welcome.

We had a room with a view second to none…and we were able to drift off to sleep listening to the sound of the waves lapping on the shore.

The hotel is situated in a great location – on the beach and at the edge of the small town of Armação de Pêra. There was a pedestrian walk way from the hotel to where the fishermen have their boats at the other end of town.

There are many great restaurants, cafes and bars all offering good traditional fresh food and Portuguese wines. It appears to be a very Portuguese town, so far unspoilt.

The “Raj” restaurant in the hotel serves really authentic Indian food. It’s a must, if visiting the town of Armação de Pêra. The buffet breakfast was great too and there are ocean views from both restaurants and the bar of the hotel.

Can’t wait for the next opportunity to escape and this little town will be our number one choice…

April Quiz - Contributed

Monday 4th April saw battle joined once again in the Raj Restaurant where 'Postman Pat & his friends' were able to follow up last month's victory with another narrow win. Despite the introduction of the 'Joker' card which allowed double points to be scored in one of the rounds the other five teams were unable to muster sufficient points to unseat the reigning champions.
With nearly 400 Euros raised so far for the Gaivota Childrens Home in Albufeira Lynn and Martin will make everyone welcome to their last quiz night of the Spring season which will take place on Monday 2nd May in the Raj Restaurant.

”“Great location” - Our latest review

Date of review: Apr 4, 2011 Stayed here March 2011. Had stayed here before when it was Hotel Garbe, and always enjoyed it. Since becoming a Holiday Inn some rooms have been completely refurbished, and are very pleasantly appointed. Many of the staff were here before the change, and are very friendly. We always stay in a sea view room. The balcony is small, but the view makes up for it. We were on a bed and breakfast rate. The breakfast is a buffet, and there is a very reasonable hot and cold choice. The dining room overlooks the ocean, as does the bar. Hotel wifi only really available in the bar area, however there is free wifi in the town (cmsfreenet) and this was picked up in our hotel room, so no problems with e-mailng home etc. Since our last stay, the work on the main street where the hotel is is finished, and it is now a mainly pedestrianised area, and pleasant to stroll along. There has been a lot of development in Armacao de Pera, but the sea front still has a 'village' feel about it, and the fishing boats coming in along the beach add to this. It is pretty quiet in March, which suits us. Think it may be very busy in main season. Superb long beach you can walk along, and cliff top walks if you prefer somehitng more challenging. Dined out in the evening, and would recommend A Grehla, Clipper, Restaurant Hera and L'Oasis Pizza.

Thank you for your comments

Trip Advisor “Excellent Value”

Date of review: Mar 31, 2011

Stayed here for five days and could'nt fault it for value. Good rooms with sea view from the balcony, good breakfast, excellent staff, direct access to miles of beach and - UK Holiday Inns take note - FREE WI FI IN BAR AND RECEPTION. Although we did'nt know in advance they also laid on free tea and cakes every afternoon at 3.30pm in the bar. All this for under £60 per day for a couple. Couldn't beat that in the UK and we will be going back.
