The Story of the Almond Blossom

Late January, early February is one of the loveliest time to visit the Algarve when the Almond trees are smothered in blossom.

Heralding the arrival of spring, the almond trees come into blossom and cover the Algarve in a mantle of white.

A unique sight that spreads across the fertile hillsides of the Barrocal region, where the almond trees are covered with clouds of flowers, whose petals are then scattered over the fields and create the impression of a carpet of snow shining in the sunlight.

The legend of the almond- blossom, is a story that has remained forever in the collective imagination of the Algarve people as a way of explaining this flowery end to the winter season.

According to the legend, in the time when the Al-Gharb belonged to the Arabs, there reigned in Silves the young prince Ibn-Almundim, who fell in love with and married Gilda, the daughter of a great lord of the northern peoples, who had himself been defeated in battle by the Moorish king.

Their wedding was celebrated with a great feast, but the beautiful princess remained forever sad and did not share the prince’s happiness. Physicians were called in from all over the world, but none of them succeeded in finding a cure for that pain.

Until, one day, an old Nordic man told the king that Gilda was homesick for the white snow-covered fields of her homeland.

Ibn-Almundim therefore ordered the planting of thousands of almond-trees all over the province, so that, when they blossomed, they might cover the southern lands with white petals, deceiving the princess into forgetting her feeling of homesickness and bringing joy back into her life.

And his bidding was complied with, so that, ever since that far-off springtime, the Algarve has been filled with the magic of the almond-trees in blossom.

Algarve by Train

Discover the Algarve by train

The railway line between Tunes and Lagos offers a relaxing journey across lovely countryside that takes less than an hour. The high points on the journey are the Silves orange groves, the bridge over the river Arade, the entrance to Portimão, the views over the Alvor estuary and Meia Praia.

Water and sunshine
The journey starts at Tunes with a small surprise because the railcar sets of northwards as if it were heading back to Lisbon. Quickly though, we realise we are not going back the wrong way as the line starts to curve to the left and heads off westward almost parallel to the sea. Right from the beginning we catch sight of the scenery that will keep us company for the coming kilometres: orange groves and irrigation channels as far as the eye can see.

Algoz is the first station, and then a few minutes later we come to Silves. The red sandstone castle and town are just 2 km due north of the station but hidden by a succession of red earth hills. Silves still has an interesting old centre that is more or less contained within the medieval walls. The cathedral and church of the Misericórdia, on the top of the hill, the maze of streets and stairs that connect the right bank of the river Arade to the acropolis, the esplanades and the handicraft shops are just some of the reasons to visit the town. In Islamic times, it was one of the largest and most learned sites in the Iberian Peninsula although it lost its importance and entered into decline after the Portuguese conquered it (temporarily in 1189 and then definitively in 1242). The Islamic museum, built around a well from the same time, beside the wall brings back this important heritage.

After Silves, the line changes direction slightly and turns one again towards the south west and the coast. The route tends to follow the meanderings of the river Arade towards the sea, east of Portimão. It is worth while looking out the right side of the train at the town of Estômbar, with its whitewashed houses climbing the hillside and the double tower of the mother church.

Portimão is not much further and the line starts to approach the coast as it crosses the Arade marshes. To cross the actual river Arade we have a funny metal bridge made up of a succession of arches. This is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful parts of the journey with sunlight and water as far as you can see. As we pull in to the town we can look down on the new waterfront area with riverside amenities such as bars, restaurants and esplanades.

Vineyards, orchards and fig trees
From here on, the journey comes up with another surprise. Instead of staying close to the sea, the line makes a long curve northwards searching out more solid terrain that is not so liable to flooding (the river Alvor and the marshes are not far away). Passing some vineyards and traditional fruit trees (figs, carobs, etc.) we come to one of the prettiest and best renovated stations on the line: Mexilhoeira Grande, with a pointed metal porch standing on yellow columns.

The vineyards and fig trees are interspersed by orchards and some pine trees. And then, one again, we are back at the shoreline and a sudden glimpse of the river Alvor off to the left as the train goes over a metal bridge.

Lagos is not far away now. The line clings to the coast and the dunes until Meia Praia. This is another high point of the journey and a marvellous way to end the trip. A sharp bend gives us a great view over Lagos, from the mouth of the Ribeira de Bensafrim on one side to the Forte da Bandeira and the white towers of São Sebastião church half way up the hill on the other.

The train ends its journey in the new station a bit to the east of the old one which is an interesting construction from the 1920s covered in glazed tiles. The little Lagos Railway Museum is housed in the old engine sheds.

If you want to walk over to Lagos waterfront, all you have to do is cross the marina and the pedestrian bridge over the Bensafrim. Now you can set off and discover one of the best kept towns in the Algarve with the gold-leaf carvings and tiles in Santo António church, breathtaking views from the forte da Bandeira esplanades, the fifteen century walls and a cosmopolitan atmosphere in the pedestrian precincts that stretch from Largo de Camões to beside the hospital.

Very many thanks to everyone who took part in the Swim For Shoes events on Christmas and New Year's Day this year.

The 1.280,50 Euros raised will be used by the Amigos das Crianças to purchase shoes throughout the year for young people living at the Gaivota home in Albufeira.

All the hard work, and the discomfort caused by immersion in freezing water in mid winter (!), are very much appreciated by everyone at the Gaivota.

Querença Sausage Festival - 22nd January

The 2012 Querença Chorizo Festival will take place on Sunday, 24th January.

It is a festival in honour of St. Luis (the protector of animals).

Traditionally the families in inland Algarve raised a pig to sustain themselves through the year and asked St. Luis to keep it in good health. To thank the saint they offer their best homemade chorizo.

The festival includes a procession, musical entertainment and, of course, lots of homemade chorizo!

The group Sunqur Sa’di Ensemble will be giving a performance of traditional music and dance from Egypt.

“Tanoura Dance”: its origins are closely connected with the sufi dance Mawlawi, which, through its whirling, is linked to heaven and to spirituality. Interminable rotations, with the multicoloured costumes of the dancers, create the illusion of a human kaleidoscope. This dance can be seen mainly during the “Mooled”, festivities that take place in the city of Islamic Cairo, and recently at cultural events all over the world. “Saidi Dance” originated in Upper Egypt and represents the fight between men using their tahtib (sticks). It is a very energetic dance which follows the rhythms of the tabla and the mizmar with its jumps. “Nubian Dance”: Nubia, in southern Egypt and part of Sudan, is a very distinctive region and its dance and music are very infectious, with lively rhythms and their delicate, fluid movements.

Southend to Faro

Daily flights from Southend to Faro will start 5th April.

With expansion at London's largest airports out of bounds but demand for flights increasing, regional airports are clamouring to market themselves as alternatives. Southend is the latest, last month announcing a ten-year deal with EasyJet to offer cheap flights to Europe.

The runway is being extended to accommodate holiday jets and, from April next year, they will be flying to destinations such as Ibiza, Barcelona and Faro.

However, EasyJet says it is moving some routes from Stansted to Southend, claiming that it will fly 800,000 passengers through the new terminal next year. It’s unclear as yet of there will be less flights from Stansted to Faro. With Stansted’s location right next to the M11, that would be a sad move for many passengers heading North.

There will be a daily flight to Faro, with some very competitive rates. The flight leaves Southend in the afternoon, and leaves Faro in the morning. With Easy Jets new FLEXI fare you get hold luggage included in the price as well as Speedy Boarding, unlimited date changes and no 'extra payment fees'.

Congratulations and thanks to all those brave swimmers who participated in the Annual Swim for Shoes on New Years Day on Armação de Pêra beach in front of the Holiday Inn Algarve, either by paddling or getting totally immersed in the sea!

We are delighted to say that the total of donations raised to date from the swims on Christmas Day and New Years Day, the Christmas Eve Sandcastle Competition and the Boxing Day Treasure Hunt is €1278 which will all be used to buy new shoes for children in care.

Boxing Day Treasure Hunt Winners

Congratulations to the winners of our Boxing Day Treasure Hunt

The third Boxing Day Treasure Hunt took place on Monday, 26th December in Armação de Pêra.

After a brisk walk around the town and a small excursion to the beach to collect required items the contestants returned to the Holiday Inn Algarve with their completed sheets.

Cap’n Whitebeard happily shared his treasure with the winners - the "The Jolly Rogers" and announced that the event had raised 60 Euros, which will be added to Swim for Shoes fund.

Swim for Shoes - Christmas Day, 2011

A big THANK YOU to everyone who participated in the Christmas Swim yesterday and helped to raise almost 800 Euros to buy shoes for the children of «A Gaivota» in Albufeira - Congratulations.

The weather was kind (sunshine, blue sky and 17c) to the almost 150 Father Christmases that took part.
Certificates were awarded to all those who got wet and everyone enjoyed a very welcome glass of Hot Choclate and brandy in the Holiday Inn Algarve bar afterwards.

We also thank RTP and SIC for broadcasting this worthy action. And...don't forget, come join us for the New Year's Swim on the 1st of January,2012 same time, same place !!

Competitors were ask to "build a sandcastle containing at least four towers, a moat and a flag....."
Blue sky and sunshine enabled five teams to compete against each other on Armação de Pêra beach in front of the Holiday Inn Algarve on Christmas Eve.

Our congratulations go to the Bonsall Family who won the competition - with a "castle" Nativity.

Many thanks to Martin Binns and Lynn Love for organising this event, which raised 50 Euros for the Swim for Shoes collection.

The Holiday Inn Algarve is situated in the small town of Armação de Pêra in the Algarve.

Location: Midway along the south coast of Portugal, 11 kms West of Albufeira, 13 kms East of Portimao and 50 kms West of Faro & the airport.

South facing on low lying cliffs with a fairly flat area between a main road promenade and the main national road.

Armação de Pêra offers one of the best sandy beaches in the Algarve. The beach is long, wide and sandy, backed by cliffs at one end and it is possible to walk for miles along this beach, past the golf course at Salgados and on towards Gale.

The old part of the town still retains much of its original charm, although the town has grown at a tremendous rate over the past few years. The Old Casino often hosts art exhibitions showing work from local artists and there is a church and a fort in the old part of town. In nearby Alcantarilha, there is another old chapel which may be of interest to the holidaymaker.

There is a local market which is held every Saturday morning, as well as the ´Lota´ on the fisherman’s beach. This is where the catch of the day is sold to the many local restaurants.

There are many bars & restaurants along the beach front, look out for `Pedro´s Bar` and Rocha Palha right on the beach.

On the opposite side of the road - set back from the beach there are many more to choose from: Tasca and O Serol serve excellent fish dishes as well traditional meat dishes. There are Chinese restaurants as well as our own famous Indian Restaurant ` Raj at Garbe´ (you can check out the menu on our website). Generally the food served at all the local restaurants is excellent. Most places have a varied menu of grilled meat or fresh fish usually served with salad or fresh vegetables and at least one vegetarian dish.

Going West, the next resort area is called Senhora da Rocha. This boasts two lovely coves and a small chapel situated between the two coves on the cliff top. The smaller fisherman’s cove can be accessed through some caves from the other larger cove.

Going further West and slightly inland there is the village of Porches which also has a lovely old church. Here you will find a couple of very nice coffee bars, along with some very good restaurants. Not far from here is the famous Porches Pottery, where you can see them decorating the pots!

The Great Christmas and New Year Challenge - 8th Year

Once again we will be "swimming for shoes" during the festive season.

Diary dates - two opportunities to SWIM FOR SHOES where you can have a dip in the Atlantic Ocean and help to raise money for children here who are in need of new shoes.

These will be on Christmas Day and New Years Day at 11.00 a.m. on the beach at Armação de Pêra in front of the Holiday Inn Algarve (formerly the Hotel Garbe).

All you need to do is turn up with swimwear, towel and go in for a full swim or just a paddle – the choice is yours as long as part of you gets wet ! Then everyone who takes part can recover in the Holiday Inn Bar and enjoy a Hot Bomba on Christmas Day and hot chocolate on New Years Day.

Buying shoes for the children who are in care is an ongoing expense and we want to help as many as possible start 2012 with a new pair of shoes

Adults and children are all welcome to take part on the understanding that you do so at your own risk. If you have family and friends staying over the festive season it will certainly be something different to do!

L’Oasis Italiana Pizzeria - Excellent Pizza & Pasta dishes. From the hotel turn left, take your first turning on your right and first right again. The restaurant is on your right.

A Pelintra - A very good all round restaurant
Serves a mix of fresh meat and fish dishes at great value prices. From the hotel turn right and continue along taking your second street on the left. Continue down the hill towards the roundabout with the fountain. The Restaurant is on your right just before the roundabout.

Rocha da Palha - Enjoys a great position right off the beach. Serves a nice selection of meat & fish dishes. From the hotel turn right and continue along passing the church on your left take the next right turn and down the steps towards the beach.

A Tasca - Small friendly Bistro (advisable to book a table). Serves a good mixture of dishes – shellfish and sauces are excellent. From the hotel turn right and walk along passing the church on your left, the road will then narrow up hill and you will see the old fort (Fortaleza ) on your right hand side.
Follow the road down the hill and the restaurant is in a small side street on your left.

O Serol – One of the oldest family restaurants in the town. Serves excellent fish and shellfish as well as steaks – very fresh and well served From the hotel turn right and walk along the sea front, passing the church on your left. the road will then narrow up hill, continue along and you will see the old fort (Fortaleza) on your right hand side. Follow the road down the hill and the restaurant is just a little further along on the left opposite the fishing boats

Zé Leiteiro - Fish Restaurant (Closed on Mondays). For a fixed price you can each as much fish as you like – fresh catch of the day! Turn right at the hotel and walk along the sea front towards the fishing boats Pass Fortaleza coffee bar towards O Serol but take a left turn just before –
(down the small side street )

Chicken Piri Piri – The famous chicken dish from the town of Guia There are several excellent restaurants in the town of Guia all famous for their BBQ’d chicken with Piri Piri sauce but all serve other great dishes too! Take the N125 east towards Faro, pass Zoo Marine and continue ahead to the next roundabout (you will see stone chickens in the middle!). This is the town of Guia – You can take a right or left at the roundabout for some great choices on where to eat.

Dia da São Martinho

Dia da São Martinho – Saint Martin - is celebrated on the 11th November.

Celebrated throughout Portugal, this annual event pays homage to the saint who, on a cold and blustery November night, shared his cape with a poor stranger. The day is toasted with new wine tasting and roasted chestnuts – a Portuguese speciality

The legend goes that São Martinho was a brave soldier. On this day, a long time ago, he saw a poor beggar shivering with cold and without hesitation he handed him over his warm military cloak.

As a reward God made the sun shine through the clouds, and in remembrance of his generosity, on this day every year the days get a little warmer.

Armação de Pera and its History

The once village of Armação de Pera, is a treasure trove to be discovered, as hidden away, is an historical heart that will surprise many.

Situated by the mouth of the river Alcantarilha, it is believed the Romans had a military base here to protect those living along the river. The remains of such a base are thin on the ground, but old salt tanks dating from this period were discovered on the beach. The tanks were used by the Romans to collect salt for preserving fish.

When the Romans departed, any settlement they had petered out; people preferred to live further up-river, at present day Pêra. Their main livelihood was still fishing and Estacio da Veiga says in his book, Antiguidades Monumentais do Algarve, that in ancient times, a fleet of fishing boats would leave from Ponta da Galé to catch tuna. In 1639, the site of present day Armação was known as Armação da Pedra da Galé.

In 1661, a fort was built to offer protection from pirates and other invaders. It was named after the local patron saint, Santo António da Pedra and below its walls the local fishermen felt safe enough to settle. Disaster struck on November 1st 1755, the day that much of southern Portugal was destroyed by the great earthquake.

Accompanying the earthquake was a tidal wave of such enormity that, according to Pinho Leal, author of Portugal Antigo e Moderno (1873) the village was completely destroyed by the sea. Eighty-four people died and only one house remained. The earthquake damaged much of the fort, but the original entrance still remains. When walking past, take time to look up above at the doorway where you will see the old coat-of-arms. If you walk through the doorway towards the sea, look at the flooring. Close to the walls you will walk across the original flagstones, barely notice-able but still there. To help the people recover from this disaster, a chapel was built within the fort. When completed it was given the same name as the fort, but today is known as Ermida Nossa Senhora do Aflitos. It has hardly altered since it was built, but sadly is now rarely open to the public.

Once the chapel was completed, parts of the fort were also rebuilt. The building to the left of the doorway was used to house troops before being handed over to the Direcçao Geral da Alfandega of Faro in 1879 as a customs house, and later it became a station for the GNR.

From the mid 19th century, confidence in the area appears to have returned. Fishermen once again began to build houses and develop commercial activities such as boat building, fish processing, rope, sail and net making. Armação was a warren of narrow streets and alleys and the people, young and old, men and women, were all employed one way or another in keeping the boats out at sea to catch fish, particularly tuna.

Only a few of these streets remain, their names bearing witness to the commercial activities their housed – Rua das Artes (street of fishing nets) Rua das Velhas (street of sails) Rua do Candeeiro (street of candles and lamps) By wandering through these streets, to the east of the fort, you can easily image how life was in the village a hundred years ago.

The decline of tuna stocks coincided with the appearance of tourism in the Algarve during the sixties. Attracted by the spectacular expanse of golden sand, the Hotel Garbe (now the Holiday Inn Algarve) was the first hotel to be built in the town. An old photograph in the reception shows the hotel standing alone above the beach with no other development in sight.

Today the picture in very different, as Armação de Pêra has gradually expanded westwards along the cliff tops. In 1991 it was officially granted the status of a town. There are about 4,000 permanent residents, but summer holidaymakers swell the numbers to over 70,000. Although the smallest town in the Council de Silves, it generates approximately two thirds of the Council’s direct income.

The summer is fine for beachgoers, but the quieter winter months are the best time to visit Armação de Pêra and discover for yourself its historical heart.

We stayed for 5 nights from 20th October 2011.

Having viewed previous reviews on Trip Advisor, I was a little tentative as I'm a real clean freak and expect good service. I wasn't disappointed. We arrived really late, but the chap on reception was very helpful and efficient. Both rooms were newly decorated in a contemporary style and immaculate (4th floor). Although the shower was a bit cool first night, it was fine the rest of the time and really powerful.

The views were stunning and the beach really clean too.The breakfast was lovely, plenty of choice, from full English (buffet) to fresh fruit and cheeses, pastries etc etc. The chef was very attentive to replenishing and the breakfast time was nice and long - 7am til 11am.

I can't fault this hotel, and I'm very choosy. The cafe over the road was excellent too and served us a meal at 11pm! If I have to say one thing, it would be that the other guests were much older than us and we felt a bit self-conscious at breakfast time as it was very quiet and not family-orientated.

If you love peace and quiet and want excellent service this is a safe bet when staying in the region. If you're after a livelier hotel with young families and trendy young people then maybe it's not for you.All in all a great experience, very relaxing and we'll be returning. Thank you so much.

The cockerel is probably one of the most popular symbols of Portugal,

But do you actually know why it became such a famous symbol?

The legend dates back to the 14th Century, and like all legends, each narrator adds his own flavour.

In Barcelos, a small town in Portugal, a passing pilgrim, who was on his way to São Tiago de Compostela (in Spain), was wrongly accused of theft, for which the penalty was death. Feeling threatened in a foreign village, he only had his faith to call upon.

He appealed to "Our Lady" and St. James (the patron Saint of protection) that justice be done.

The pilgrim found his way to the Judge who was to decide his fate.

The judge was about to commence eating a roast cockerel for his dinner. The pilgrim pleaded, "If I am innocent, that cockerel will get up and crow.

The cockerel at once got up and crowed heartily. The pilgrim was released and went on his way.

And to this day, the cockerel has been a symbol of faith, justice and good luck.

It is All Saints day. The first All Saints' Day occurred on May 13, 609 (C.E.) when Pope Boniface IV accepted the Pantheon as a gift from the Emperor Phocas. Boniface dedicated it as the Church of Santa Maria Rotonda in honor of the Blessed Virgin and all martyrs. During Pope Gregory III's reign (731-741), the festival was expanded to include all saints and a chapel in St. Peter's church was dedicated accordingly. Pope Gregory IV officially designated the day in 837.

Subject: For the attention of the hotel manager: Feedback on our week with you (1 - 8 October)

Although we filled in the feedback form in the room, I just wanted to say again how very impressed we were with the hotel, its facilities and – especially – its staff.

The hotel was beautifully placed, and very handy both for the town and its beaches. We particularly thought the breakfast buffet was excellent.

Our deal was bed and breakfast only, so our feedback on the restaurant staff is relatively limited, but I wanted to say something particularly about the Reception staff.

The Reception staff (- we had dealings with several) were unfailing helpful and keen to please. We booked two excursions (- nothing to do with the hotel on either occasion), both of which messed us about a fair bit: each was subject to several changes of pick up time and location. The Reception staff kept us up to date admirably and could not have been more helpful in making sure we joined up with the rest of the group. Similarly, they helped confirm our pre-arranged transfer back to Faro airport and made sure everything went smoothly.

I’m not sure anyone says ‘thank you’ and ‘well done’ enough these days, but your Reception staff certainly deserve it.

We've just returned from 9 nights at this exceptional hotel. From the fantastic pre-sales service (nothing was too much trouble in terms of organising our room, advising on travel and ensuring we got the most from our holiday) everything about the hotel and it's staff are first rate.

We booked via the IC Hotels booking site and used some of our Priority Club reward points, so we paid an additional 24 euro per night for a sea view - absolutely well worth the cost as the views are simply stunning. We had a fabulous suite on the top floor, the refurbished rooms are luxurious and have a fabulous huge bathroom. The balconies are somewhat small but with such stunning views you really don't notice, and they make the perfect spot for an early morning coffee or late evening G&T!

The rooms are equipped with everything you need, tea and coffee, fridge, wide screen TV and lots of space - fabulous. A very comfy bed and excellent service in rooms.

The public areas are cool and spacious with a modern feel, the Boavista bar has the most amazing views and does a fabulous happy hour where cocktails and drinks are almost half price - an absolute must - don't miss this chilled out hour! We had breakfast on the terrace from time to time - again stunning! The pool area was a little crowded but there are several levels and we found we preferred the upper levels where the views were again absolutely amazing. The pool itself is fab!

Armacao was a real surprise. Although we've travelled extensively in Portugal it was new to us. It does have some high rise buildings but you don't see any of this from the Holiday Inn - just the glorious beach and coastline. However, the resort is truly Portugese, the food and service was some of the best we've experienced, at immensely cheap prices. The old town is lovely, we really enjoyed sitting at Pedro's Bar (on the Fisherman's beach) for a mid morning coffee and tostas (for the grand sum of 3 euro!).

Top Tips - sea view room a must, get a suite if you can, happy hour is brilliant value for money, best restaurants for us were Cozhina Do Mar (old Town) 10 euro for 4 courses!, O Fernando (just across from Holiday Inn - lovely fish dishes), Happy Talk Chinese Restaurant (turn left from Hotel and head away from the Town - it's the last restaurant). A superb holiday - we will definitely be back.

Recipes from the Algarve - Arroz Doce

Sweet Rice Pudding

1 cup of rice 2 egg yolk
3 cups milk ½ cup of sugar
1 tsp ground lemon peel 1 tsp vanilla sugar
1 tbsp cinamon 1 tbsp sugar

Put the rice into boiling water and after five minutes drain off the water. Bring the milk with sugar and vanilla to the boil.
Add the rice and cover. Simmer until the rice is soft. Break the egg yolk and mix with lemon peel. Stir this into the rice pudding. Fill into small glass dishes and stand to cool. Turn over and sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon.

We stayed here for 5 nights and loved it. The hotel is right on the edge of Armacao de Pera. You can walk down to the beach (but the water is a bit cold) or stay by the hotel pool which has an amazing view overlooking the sea.

Unless you want to explore the rest of the Algarve there is no need for a car, there are lots of restaurants and amenities available within walking distance. The hotel arranged for a taxi transfer from Faro airport for 45 Euros.

The rooms were nice- with great balcony views. Our air conditioning unit was not working the night we arrived but was repaired by the time we came back from the beach the next day.

We would definitely stay here again.

IHG Race Around the World

On 27th July , The Holiday Inn Algarve - Armação de Pera participated in the IHG Race Around the World.

IHG (InterContinental Hotels Group) globally is donating $1 for every kilometre that one of their employees either walked, cycled or swam on 27th July. 2011 around the world, in all its 4400 hotels, committed to travel.

The goal was to raise $150,000 (150,000km worldwide) support the "Shelter in the Storm," a program that supports communities where the hotels are located in the Group and that are affected by natural disasters, providing food and shelter.

Holiday Inn Algarve participated by organising a 3.8km walk on the evening of 27th July which despite the heat eleven staff members took partcontributing a total of 170 kilometres. Another six staff members got out their bicycles and add a further 130 kilometres to make a total 170 kilometres.

IHG has initiated a project called Race Around the World, which we are participating in.

It is roughly 150 000km around the world, and IHG has said that for each km an employee walks, runs, swims or cycles on Wednesday 27th July, they will donate $1 to the new IHG “Shelter in a Storm” fund, up to that 150 000km mark.

Almost 20 Holiday Inn Algarve staff are participating today. We are hoping to achieve 171 kilometres.

We stayed in a 4th floor seaview room for seven nights at beginning of July - The Hotel is certainly a proper 4 star hotel and deserves the Holiday Inn name -

The room was excellent with wonderful wide views over the massive sandy beach below - the beds were confortable and the bathroom very clean - the large flat screen TV had BBC1 as one of its channel options with good reception - WiFi Internet is free in the bar area but you can also pick up a fairly good free public service from most rooms and the grounds both my laptop and iPhone worked well -

The Hotel has a buffet breakfast which again meets the 4 star rating with lots of choice both full English and lighter choices - the evening buffet is OK but as there is a excellant Indian Resturant (we eat curry a lot and this was one of the best) on the complex plus loads of local eateries within walking distance its best to book B&B terms - The Indian is called The Raj and you can even apply for a 10% discount card before you arrive and it will be waiting for you on your first, but I can assuure you not your only visit - this is a real Indian Resturant run by Indians not Bangledesh people as in UK - The swimming pool is fairly small but very clean with plenty of sunloungers and cushions plus a pool side bar servering drinks and snacks - a few steps leads you to the beach and another excellant and very good value Palm Beach bar serving drinks, snacks and delicous ice creams -

The large beach has plenty of sunshades and watersports plus trips to the sea caves available - Many guests here on repeat visits and we will be one of them.

Quiz Nights and Buddies Charity Success

During the early months of 2011, funds for the Gaivota Childrens Home charity in Albufiera were raised from Lynn & Martin’s quiz nights -- held at the ‘Holiday Inn Algarve‘, Armação de Pêra and various social outings with Carole’s Buddies (a group of like minded people). Visits included Alte and Monchique. Also before the summer break, a wonderful finale meal at the ‘Casa de Pasto’ restaurant in Algoz.

The total amount raised by each group was €500. A cheque for €1.000 was handed to Fatima Saude on behalf of Gaivota Childrens Home (Santa Casa DA Misericordia) .

This money will be used for the children to shop for some of their own clothes and to meet the cost of dental treatments, when required.

Lynn & Martin and Carole thank all those that took part in the events as well as all those venues that supported this very important charity work.

As the tour organsier of a 20+ large group of golfers and this being my 10th visit. I must say that this hotel just gets better and better everytime we go.

The location is stunning, the heated swimming pool a real bonus.

The beach absolutly fabulous. Breakfast, everything you could wish for and more.

Also my favorite time of the day 'Happy Hour' on the terrace. 40% off all drinks and cocktails. The Indian restaurant The Raj is the best in town and located in the Hotel.

All the staff are brilliant will no exceptions, a special thank you to Jane and Helen on the Golf Desk for all their hard work in organising everyting for us including transfers. Golf at Alamos, Salgados and Palmares was Fantastic.

Praise was given by all of our party and we can highly reccommend the Holiday Inn as possibly the best hotel on the Algarve.

Fiesa Photo Competition - Win a weekend for two

In conjuction with Fiesa - the International Festival of Sand Sculptures we are running a Photography Competition.

Entrants will have the possibility to win a weekend for two at the Holiday Inn Algarve.

The photos will be judged and the winner announced at the end of October, 2011.

Photo Competition Terms and Conditions

The terms and conditions of entry for this competition are as follow:

· Closing date for entries is on the 15th October.

· The competition is open to all whether professional or amateur.

· All images submitted - must have been taken at Fiesa, 2011 in Pêra and be the work of the photographer submitting them.

· It is the responsibility of each photographer to ensure that any images they submit have been taken with the permission of the subject and do not infringe either national laws or local by-laws.

· Holiday Inn Algarve and Fiesa reserve the right to feature any or all of the submitted images on its web sites and or publicity.

. Digitally manipulation is not allowed.

Medieval Fair in Silves
