Puppet Day - “Don Roberto” - 11th June, 2011
Don't miss this puppet show from the popular Portuguese theatre of glove puppets.
Performed about three centuries ago by companies or lone puppeteers who travelled the length of the country entertaining at fairs, beaches and festivals, it gradually got lost over time, remaining only in the childhood memories of an older generation.
From the European tradition of popular puppets, the Teatro D. Roberto has little need for stagecraft, depending purely on the characters and the action that develops between them.
The Barber
On his wedding day, D. Roberto decides to go to the barber’s for a shave. Despite plenty of incidents, the barber carries out his task and finally presents the bill. D. Roberto refuses to pay. They fight and D. Roberto ends up killing the barber. Death comes in search of the victim and wants to take D. Roberto with it. A life-and-death battle which, of course, D. Roberto wins, killing Death itself.
The Bullfight
With no dramatic plot as such, this piece describes the different stages of a Portuguese-style bullfight with its typical characters: the bull herder, the bullfighter and of course, the bull.
