Several Algarve ladies luncheon groups met at the Holiday Inn Algarve in Armação de Pêra on April 7 for a joint lunch and to celebrate friendship.

A total of 86 members from the Western, Eastern and Central Algarve Groups, As Serranas and attended the event organised by Carole Good-Dixon as an opportunity to socialise, share ideas and plan future events.

Guest speaker Sheena Rawcliffe, Managing Director of The Resident Group, publishers of the Algarve Resident, gave an inspiring talk into the subject of friendship and how it is undervalued in our society.

She said: “At school, it was easy to make friends. But friendships were also easily broken, perhaps because as teenagers we found love and our female friends became less important than our male friends.”

She went on to describe how our requirements from friends change as we get older and particularly how the Algarve’s expat community needs to “maintain” their friendships as some of its members can be faced with a divorce or the loss of a partner.

She said: “I get 200 emails a day and two are from friends. Please stop emails and texts to friends. Pick up the phone, arrange to meet with your friends and give them a hug.

“I don’t want to know about Facebook or Twitter. I enjoy seeing the colour of people’s eyes.”

Carole Good-Dixon said: “I’m absolutely thrilled to see so many ladies from across the Algarve here and to have Sheena as our speaker today is an honour. She managed to inspire us all to become better friends.”
